Winter Business School Conference 2023

Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon, hosted the Second International Winter Business School Conference (WBSC) on 20th & 21st December, 2023, under the aegis of Center of Excellence for Sustainable Development. The theme for the conference was ‘Managing Businesses for a sustainable future- G20 and beyond’.

Winter Business School Conference aimed to create a platform that initiates a dialogue between academicians who are experts in sustainable practices and industry heads, who are trying to adapt and adopt the best practices.

Day 1

Keynote Address

The event commenced with an Expert Talk by Richard S.J. Tol from the University of Sussex, Amsterdam, delving into the economic dimensions of climate change, its measurement, and the vulnerabilities faced by economically disadvantaged nations.

Industry Panel Discussion

The first day further featured a panel discussion on 'Sustainability,' wherein luminaries from the industry including Mr. Ratna Sekhar Adika - Chairman and Managing Director, Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd, Ms. Bandana Jha - Executive Director, Philanthropy & Community Impact, Kartik Sathyanarayana - Global Commercial Leader, Schneider Electric and Tania Banerjee - Project Leader, Boston Consulting Group, shared their perspectives. Moderated by Dr. Sanghmitra Bhattacharyya, Professor at Great Lakes, Gurgaon, the discussion explored pathways to sustainable development through industry initiatives, energy efficiency, employee engagement, government action, and inter-sectoral collaboration. A formal dinner with the faculty and speakers followed the insightful discussion.

Think-Tank Panel Discussion

The second day commenced with a Think Tank Panel Discussion, including Ms. Mikiko Tanaka - Director, South and Southeast Aisa, Sub Regional Office for UNESCAP; Mr. Tapas Paul, Lead Environmentalist Specialist at World Bank; Mr. Bipul Chattopadhyay, Executive Director at CUTS (Customer Unity and Trust Society). The discussion was full of insights about sustainability challenges from climate change to inequality, using G20 and SDG frameworks to illuminate India's progress and global comparisons.

Ms. Sanyukta Samaddar, IAS, provided a unique perspective on SDGs post-COVID hurdles, emphasizing collaboration and innovation. The presence of esteemed guest Prof. Brandon Randolph-Seng from Texas A&M University added charm to the occasion. He addressed the audience on examining the complexities of sustainable development amid global imbalances and business challenges, urging collaboration and deeper understanding.

The closing session featured distinguished speakers Dr. Leila Dagher and Professor Rudolph from Texas A&M University – Commerce, offering invaluable insights, particularly in statistical research and management theory. The session emphasized key takeaways, resonating with engaged researchers and offering practical guidance.

Their respective expertise in statistical research and management theory provided invaluable insights for the audience, encompassing minor details like the critical role of cover letters in securing publication consideration. Emphasis was placed on the alignment of theories with chosen journals, the necessity of evidence-based gap-filling, and the importance of relevant citations. These key takeaways resonated with the engaged researchers present, offering practical guidance.

A fireside chat session was also hosted for the participating researchers with Keynote Editors - Professor Brandon Rudolph and Prof. Aviral Kumar Tiwari along with Dr. Leila Dagher.

Upcoming researchers also participated in the event and presented their rigorous research and analysis to the keynote editors and speakers. The participants received feedback from panellists who are at the forefront of cutting-edge research in various sustainability areas.

The event provided a platform for dialogue between experts in a long-term vision of sustainability and those who pursue excellence in short-term efficiency. The overall objective of raising awareness on the balance of efficient functional business areas & sustainable practices, and promoting research on the same was effectively realized through the conference.
